Luxuriously Restrained.

Our new Leather Tote debuted at last weekend's Trapper Jane Open Studio Sale, to much swooning, touching and fan fare- honestly I'm still blushing!

I've been carrying the prototype around for 4 months now... making certain everything was just right, one pocket, one strap, room for laptop, lunch and a book, but not the kitchen sink.

Given my source of the inspiration it seemed quite perfect to introduce The Leather Tote Bag in Trapper Jane's beautiful space. I'm always inspired by her clothing line and sought to make something that reflected a balance of thoughtful detail and seemingly restrained simplicity. I say 'seemingly restrained' because a magical thing happens when you put on Trapper Jane clothing- you feel incredibly alluring (especially the 'High Waisted Jeans'!!!).

The bag gives me that same feeling with a dash of practicality and longevity. Leather last so long and wears beautifully.

Okay, that said, here's the TJ dress I picked up at the sale. It fits perfectly and I'm so in love with it's mix of Romance and Science Fiction.

It's holiday time and tis the season for craft fair mania! We're very excited to be a part of some fantastic events this month.
Here's where you'll find us:

For the rest of November and all of December, you can find our goods at the beautiful Lotus Pop-up Shop in the Bay Center, third floor right outside the glass elevator.

The 10th annual Noel Bazaar starts this Tuesday, November 29 until December 1st. This is one of the few holiday sales that runs in the evenings and has a bar so you can warm up with a drink while shopping!

On Saturday, December 3rd we'll be at Score,a great event at Olio with 20 crafters selling items all under $20!

Oh we just can't do it. We can't put up a scarf sale when it's sunny out only to stop it right when your necks start to get cold, that's just too cruel. The only humane thing to do is extend the scarf sale. You now have until the end of September to get your hands on a circle scarf (or twenty) for 25% off. We also wanted to say a word about the charity portion of this and future sales. We've included a donation portion to help increase awareness about excellent organizations out there and to do our small part to help them be awesome. This month we're donating to Doctors Without Borders, a truly impressive group of people that seem to be one of the first organizations on the ground during any major crisis. They consistently run effective emergency programs while also having health programs set up where medical infrastructure is otherwise non-existent. Even after emergencies have subsided, MSF will often create longer running support programs to sustain the affected areas, until they're able to re-establish permanent medical facilities.

They're mission statement says:

...we seek to alleviate human suffering, to protect life and health, and to restore and ensure respect for human beings and their dignity.

That sounds pretty great to us.

Big Changes

Some great big changes are coming to Floating Gold Iceberg. Angie, the designer and heart behind FGI has been supplying Victoria and the rest of the continent with beautiful clothing and accessories for over a decade. Cara has been the soul of FGI who charms customers and artists alike as a boutique master. These two lovely ladies, while having enjoyed running the store together, will be parting ways. Cara is taking a new path and Angie is happy to support her. Unfortunately, this means the FGI Pandora street storefront will be closing it's doors at the end of June.

But don't fret, Angie will absolutely continue to create the FGI clothing you all know and love and will be introducing new and exciting pieces to the line. Business will carry on as usual through the store until the end of June and all current orders and gift certificates will be honored through the Floating Gold online shopping page after July 1st.

All FGI shopping, exciting events and promotions will be posted on the website at www.floatinggoldiceberg.com, the FGI Blog and FGI Facebook page. Derby Day and Dead Flowers

The Society pages, big hats, blue ribbons and the great balloon race... costume balls, bed races and fireworks.

Technically it took place on Saturday, but I've always loved the romance of the Kentucky Derby-

We even named a dress after it.

The Derby Dress only comes out in the heat of the summer.

They're made from a combination of new fabrics and recycled sheeting that we hunt down every spring. It's one of the seasonal markers for the company. When a pile of gorgeous sheets show up on the cutting tables you know summer is right around the corner!

Wild is the Wind

It's blustery out today and it got me thinking about wind. There's research that suggests wind, mainly the positive ions that accompany it, can lead to mood alterations in up to 75% of the population. There's an increase in seratonin that accompanies these gusts of air which can lead to hyperactive adrenaline production and bouts of over activity.

There are two great factors that lead to a recent Floating Gold Iceberg Maternity photo shoot:

1. The fantastic feedback we get from Moms and Moms-to-be. We know our clothes are eminently wearable- flattering, soft and versatile- but it's been such a pleasant surprise (incidentally that's what my Mom told me I was...) to discover our popularity with cross over maternity customers. That's all you ladies, with babies, who like to look nice, feel nice and recognize that you can wear items like our Reversible Short Dress, Cossack Pants and Belle Epoque Dress before, during and after pregnancy. We've met you at all stages, from barley showing to REAAALLY showing and we are always honoured to be a tiny part of the experience of bringing tiny people into this world!

2. Okay, the second reason is that I have a couple of the foxiest best friends of all time and one of them, Jana Stevenson, FGI illustrator extraordinaire, is about to give birth! As in, when my phone rings and I see it's her I think 'Hmm, maybe she isn't just calling to see if I want to go and eat a bunch of delicious food (I'm learning that pregnant ladies like to do this a lot- and often), maybe she's having that kid!!'...

She's a true testament to the grace that can exist when expecting a child- and the durability of FGI clothing!

Few things- and I'll say them quickly because, well, the weekend is a great thing and it about to begin!

Saltspring Island CRAFT BAZAAR. We're excited for it!

After the FUN! we had at last months Fox Fair in Victoria we're really enthused to come over and see old friends and meet some new fans on Saltspring Island this Saturday. It's such a treat for us to watch people fall in love with an FGI piece that's perfect for them because, well, we kind of fall in love back.

So take a nice ferry ride if you're not from Saltspring Island, or roll out of bed if you are and come say hello! I hear we're smack dab in the middle of the room. Old (hey!) regular Angie will be manning the booth and we've recuited FGI out-of-towner Liz for even more joie de vive. Seriously, ask her about living in Reno, NV or what Japanese toilets are really like. She's gone places and has some tales to tell.

And if that isn't enough (phewf), we'll be debuting a new lace bottom pencil skirt as well as a fresh batch of gorgeous bamboo circle scarves in black and light sky blue.

An Anorak is not a Parka.

Inspired by what has turned into a seemingly endless string of Snow Days (just kidding, it's only been two so far. We here on the west coast are often baffled when this white stuff even sticks to the ground, let alone stays for a visit, but i digress because i have cabin fever, so anyways...), Ive been reading about the difference between Anoraks and Parka's and everything in between. Mostly because i now realize that I'm a fool for not owning one of each, plus insoles, ski socks and proper long johns. I mean, what if all this snow is here for another 2 days?!

Best not to think about it. Instead let's read more about these amazing, sometimes furry, always cozy winter cover ups, then watch a little Mighty Boosh and go shovel the front walk with the dust pan- again.

You know, we just never quite seem to get truly embedded in the winter blah's in Victoria. Spring is practically bursting all around us just after Christmas. Everyone seems to be having birthday's (although it's true, that does tend to happen all year round), taking trips, having babies... and more!

A Canadian Waltz.

I've always enjoyed modern songs written in 3/4 time because you can still Waltz to them (or, you know, pretend to).

But what I've only recently learned is that when the Waltz was first introduced to society, waaaay back in the 16th century it's closed form was considered scandalous and of a some what lesser class than other traditional dances of the time.

'The French philosopher Montaigne wrote of a dance he saw in 1580 in Augsburg, where the dancers held each other so closely that their faces touched. Kunz Haas, of approximately the same period wrote that, "Now they are dancing the godless, Weller or Spinner, whatever they call it."^[1]

Although it became less shocking as it's wide steps were refined and movements became more fluid, it retained an air of intrigue as late as 1825 when the Oxford English Dictionary still defined it as "riotous and indecent".

Today it comes in many forms including the Hesitation, Viennese, Preuvian, Curacaon, Scandanavian, Cross Step and Country and Western.

So move your coffee table aside and give yourself some room because if there was ever a night to Waltz it's tonight!

FGI LOVES: Colour, a shot through the heart.

Each season we come up with a new colour palette that is inspired by sometimes no less than a dozen sources. Usually we've poured over books and magazines, picked up some flowers, gone to the paint store and had a couple vivid dreams. All of which leads us to some beautiful hues, shades, tints and values, that we then name for our own amusement:

Why yes thank you, I'd be happy to carry a handfull of 'Rannuncula' and take in a lovely 'Sunset'. Then we can go for some 'Blueberry Fro-Yo'?

That said, there have been two posts in the last month from one of our absolute favorite sites Design*Sponge that have made us go "Ahhhh! SO great and amazing and MORE COLOUR!".

The first features designer and illustrator Kim Neill's Pantone chip cookies. Inspired by her Pantone tin, she uses edible marker to add text after the icing dries. Then i assume she eats them, but that might be some classic projection on my part (paging Dr. Freud!).

The next post shot straight to the heart of Valentines Day. I'm still at a lost for words over this beautiful DIY project from Halligan Norris.

The Amsterdammer Sweater, an introduction.

Welcome to The Amsterdammer Sweater, Floating Gold Iceberg's all season, alarmingly sophisticated leather and knit hybrid pullover.

We named this sweater after a city that loves riding bikes! Because in designing it we wanted the perfect easy pullover for doing just that- RIDING BIKES! Turns out it's great with jeans and over a dress. The side pockets feature snap closures and leather accents and the elasticized hem pulls it all in at the bottom. Collar is lined with printed cotton flannel for a really cozy post-yoga cover-up, while the dolman cap-sleeves offer a nod to Japanese simplicity. *As stylish and functional as the geometric canal system of Amsterdam.

As an added bonus Jana, of Janamade Jewelery stopped by the store today to try it on over her baby bump (hard to tell, but she's already 29 weeks along!)

Last week we took some time off from designing, cutting, sewing and printing our spring things (oui!) to take part in a wandering fashion show at the Women in Business Gala in the Crystal Gardens.

Many 'mwa mwa's' to the gals who helped out- Jana for hair and makeup, Alex for printing the models (amazing!) and all the beauties in our clothes.

Thanks to 'Knotty by Nature Fibre Arts' for helping organize the event- and introducing us to some really fantastic local fibre artists. Hey, we love you guys!

Horn of Plenty

Just before Christmas we received our first shipment of Horn of Plenty at the store.
It did not last until Christmas.

People snatched up this stuff so fast that we had to ask Cathy for more! And we're looking forward to seeing more in our hot little hands sometime in February (We'll keep you posted about that, because you are going to want to get some of this amazing ceramic work for yourself. Trust us)

We are very pleased to introduce our New Studio Bathroom! (jazz hands!)

Do you see the blue of the ceiling and the blue in the hallway just outside the door?
The WHOLE bathroom used to be that colour.

That's right. The. Whole. Thing.

Last week Jana spent 2 days painting it (3 coats!) and cleaning it up.
We're thinking about printing the ceiling with something fun, and there has been talk of a rotating poster wall of prints!

Our girl Jana has been working away on new spring jewellery, and has just brought us a sweet little selection of LoveKnots. So Cute!

Gold Filled (like a corndog, but instead of a weiner it's brass, and instead of cornbread it's GOLD. Much better than goldplating, you can sand and file the metal just like regular gold, but you don't have to fork over an arm and a leg for it.) handmade LoveKnots hung on handmade crochet chains. These are totally adorable and she's sent us some new crochet colours too! Now we've got black and gold.

She also sent us a couple of really sweet recycled silver pendants. All made from studio scraps!

Fashion's Night Out

Thursday night, we were very happy to take part in Fashion's Night Out, a food drive benefit for the Mustard Seed food bank. We, along with some other great boutiques in town, took in food in trade for an opportunity to be entered into a draw to win a $50 gift certificate from each of the participating shops! (a $750 grand prize, not too shabby)

You can still take part by coming down to the store with a non perishable food donation to be entered into the draw for the rest of the week!

We were having a great time, there was champagne and truffles to be had!

Suddenly from across the street we saw a strange sight. A Giant Gingerbread Man, wearing lights. strolling non-chalantly. Just out for a stroll.

Ginger B it turns out is Market Square's Christmas Mascot, and he is an amorous fellow.
He proposed to our lovely Ellen, hugs were had, love abounded.

Then he proposed to a nice man on the street.

"It's OVER Ginger B!" Ellen shouted. (I am not making this up)

He came rushing back in, re-proposed, more hugs were had, and all was well.

Cara and Angie spent the week decorating the store for the holidays too and they did a really great job.
Handmade ornaments for over the door (with lights and evergreen branches no less) and beautiful spindley branches for hanging jewellery and other glittery things.

There you have it!
It was a really fun event and we hope to see you throughout the week!

WINTERFEST!

Last weekend, Angie and I travelled way up island to participate in Sointula's annual Winterfest.
Winterfest is a Sointula tradition which has been going on for my whole lifetime, and is an event promising talented vendors selling everything you could wish for at a holiday show from handmade soap and socks to paintings to smoked salmon. There is also delicious lunch foods to nosh, and an evening show either of the talent, or organized play variety - a whole day event!

This is the second year Floating Gold Iceberg has participated in Winterfest, and what a great response! We had people remembering us from last year, and seemingly seeking us out!

For those unfamiliar with Sointula, it is a township located on Malcolm Island which is a 20 minute ferry ride away from Port McNeill, at the northern end of Vancouver Island. Sointula has a population of approx. 800 people and has traditionally been a fishing village, with strong Finnish roots dating back over a hundred years.

If you happen to find yourself at the Northern end of Vancouver Island next November, check out Winterfest, it's a quality event! It is scheduled on the 3rd saturday in November every year. You won't be disappointed!

We thank Carmen Burrows for organizing Winterfest, and for making it very easy for FGI to participate and feel welcome.
Also Big thanks to Danni Tribe and Lionel Lewis for putting us up in their lovely home. Our experience would not have been the same with out you.

For all you folks out there who had your fill of turkey in the last week, feast your eyes on this:

It's (seemingly) the world's biggest hot dog, for only 50 cents! At IKEA. And look how excited Cara is!

I think we can all take a lesson from IKEA and their clear 'Bigger is Better' hot dog marketing strategy...

Except that it didn't work. no one ate a hot dog. But we were a little bit scared! and too distracted to decide against any of our impulse purchases at the last minute. Hats off to you IKEA!

Oh, hi again Fall.

cold nose, cold toes... but warm hands!

thanks to our new collection of Wrist Warmers (and Karmin, who sewed up a small army of them this weekend!)

They're kind of fantastic for things like warding off the dreaded 'up the sleeve' draft you get riding your bike. Or curing the chill that can come from wearing 3/4 length sleeves in cold weather. Or just being extra cozy on the couch- especially if you're a knitter or a reader.

They also lead a secret double life as a drink cozy (they weren't designed with this in mind, but happen to fit a beer perfectly. we call that a 'happy accident').

new colours and prints are making their way to our shop @ 533 Pandora, and into all the boxes we're sending to boutiques across Canada that carry Floating Gold Iceberg.

and here's a picture of Karmin drumming, which she does sometimes when she's not sewing and eating food. and sleeping. it's just one the reasons we think she's rad. yep.

Wool Kissy Kissy Skirts

In the early Spring we started making these amazing skirts out of a gorgeous bamboo blend. We did them in black (I have one, it's a go to for all seasons for me now) red and now we've got some beautiful gray ones in the store.

EVERYONE who has tried one on has HAD TO HAVE IT. I completely understand. They are in incredibly flattering and comfortable skirts. There is no shame in needing one.
(Of course I don't have any pictures on my computer of the bamboo version.)

But I DO have some photos of the new Wool ones.

Angie has made some tiny changes to the hemline and back slit of the skirt to accommodate the LINING.

Yes that's right, these beautiful wool pencil skirts are LINED and have a lace slip detail that you can see in the last photo. The little leather triangle is also pretty damn cute if you ask me.

And I will tell you. It's DAMN CUTE!!

(correction! The Wool Kissy Kissy Skirts are not in the store yet! I was over excited and in my excitement jumped the gun when I said they were that close to being ready.

It is no surprise that all of us here at FGI love Fall. I am not sure any of us could give you an accurate count of the number of scarves we each have.
And considering that our line started with Wristwarmers, not so shocking at all.

And we are lining up some STUNNERS for Fall 09.
(I know that it's already Fall 09, you should get into the store and see!)

Changing leaves, changing styles, it's all good things.
One of MY favorite Fall things are the trees. Honestly! Could there be a more beautiful thing than crisp blue sky fading into a lavender twilight, the branches and amber leaves silhouetted against it all?

No, there is not. I can tell you right now.

Angie walks home past the tree every night...

and it is usually full of crows.

Last Wednesday night she was leaving late and the murder (that's what a flock of crows is called, I am not being a weirdo) actually got uppity with her and I think that she actually ran home.
I am not making this up. I was on the phone with her at the time.

I heard them. It sounded like hundreds of them.

It was scary.

A little while ago I posted about fish pedicures and how weird they were (I think so anyway) and that little post got a lot of attention! People had strong reactions to it.
I thought it was hilarious personally, but some folks were really put off by it.
One of the amazing things about blogging, sharing ideas and whatnot, is the incredible community that you open yourself up to.

We are loving our new space

It's been an absolute pleasure to work with everyone in the same room. I hadn't really thought about how much it would change the dynamic, but it's been great so far.
We've got seperate spaces for printing and production and Angie and I even have our own desks!

We're still working out where everything is going to go, but so far I am very pleased.
I think everyone else is too!

Current Studio Obsession

I am kind of in awe that I didn't think of this before, but we are all eating this right now.
(well, 3 out of 5, but that's a clear majority.)

And I am not talking like in a curry or a soup.

We are eating it with a spoon. Sometimes on fruit. Sometimes with granola.

It is like whipped cream once you put it in the fridge.

And it's good for us. So we are going to continue eating it.

Fish Pedicures??

While I was at the Physiotherapist last week (I hurt my wrist doing DISHES of all things) I read a snippet of an article about fish pedicures.
Basically you put your feet into a pond or tub of water full of fish (I think they actually referred to them as DR. Fish) and the fish EAT THE OLD SKIN OFF YOUR FEET.

gross.

Apparently this is not bad for the fish (so the article says) and it is supposedly a comfortable experience.

I am not so sure if I am ready for that. I flip out when weeds touch me when I swim in the lake. I don't think I could handle hundreds of fish actually eating me.

We are all working industrially at Fall 09 (ohmygodIknow!) and the summer heat is making it very hard! How can you possibly focus on making something for October when it is 30 degrees inside???
We're being good though. Slugging through it like troopers. Elaborate fan systems in place all over the place.

Jana worked on some new fall prints this week that are very exciting.
Also very hush hush.

In other FGI news... WE'RE MOVING!!
Yes it's true, we are moving to a brand new (to us) studio space right next door!
We got really lucky with this new space too, now we all get to work together at the same time! Right now we are spread out over three floors so some days we don't really get to see each other.
But now! NOW we get to bounce ideas off of one another ALL DAY LONG!!

Which is going to be super rad.

So today we happened to have lunch at similar overlapping times and we got to talking about almond butter.

Jana has just discovered her New Favorite Snack (please notice the capital letters, she does this) which is sliced apples (not gala though, they upset her guts. Too much? Too late!) dipped in Almond butter.
"this is freaking delicious!" she says.
Alex and Laura agree.
(Laura's lunch today was an amazing salad with a pesto fusilli dish combo that we were all jealous of)
Jana's preferred nut butter (HA!) is Nuts to You, while Alex enjoys Trader Joe's.

Which got me (Jana) to thinking, what are other good for you type snacks that are also freaking delicious?
A teaspoon dipped in a little bit of honey that is THEN dipped (I know!) into roasted and chopped almonds and pumpkin seeds is really great.

Frozen grapes are another good healthy tasty snack.

What do you like??

How can you get so lucky??

I just have so many things that I want to share! And I only get a chance to jump on the computer here at work so often. So I am capitalizing on some solo time here in the office!

Something that we do here at FGI is Top 5 Lists.
We have a white board in the kitchen and a revolving list of the Top 5 Things at any given time.
For example...
The Top 5 Reasons You Are One.

Other Top 5's we've had have been:
Top 5 Hats
Top 5 18th Century Band Names (the Sideways Glances and The Fleshy Babies were my favorite)
Top 5 Fixers (Duct Tape and The Wolf were particularly favored around here)

And right now we've got Top 5 Ex Boyfriends. Duran Duran and Art school being the truest of the true.

For some reason almost every number three is a drawing of a slice of Pizza.
I am not sure why that is, but it is a very good number three.

I realized this week that I completely skipped over the Grand Opening!
I still have some photos on my camera, but we DO happen to have some pictures that Miss Alex took to share!

Oh no wait! THESE are from our first soft opening back on the 1st of May! So funny! I guess we'll have to get the pictures off of my camera sooner rather than later so you can all see how lovely it was.
And it was really lovely.

I can share these however, some sweet details in the store right now!

Just LOOK at our changeroom! It's so amazing. Angie and Andy actually built it themselves!
We were all appropriately impressed at the unveiling. They did some very good work.

We are having a Grand Opening Extravaganza THIS FRIDAY (May 29) at the store!
From 4-8pm, you can snack on delicious appetizers, sip lovely refreshments, and take advantage of our amazing 15% off of everything in the store!

I know, it's almost too much sweetness to bear, I understand.
